Alex, this resonated deeply. Public service has been my dream too — I served a year in AmeriCorps NCCC after college and was overjoyed to join my current agency. Like you, I believe in the mission and in government as a force for good.
It’s hard seeing dedicated civil servants be vilified. I’m sad you’ve reached the point where leaving feels right, but I respect you for doing what you need to do. Thank you for serving, for your honesty, and for reminding the rest of us that we’re not alone. All the best to you!
